MCR News, Comic Book Reviews Kick-Ass, Captain America, more

June 24, 2010   ·   Video Book Reviews   ·     ·

Breaking News: Lead singer of My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way is calling Umbrella Academy his debut comic. BUT, we dug up a comic he published way back when he was in high school called “On Raven’s Wings”.

Mark Millar and John Romita take on real life people getting into superhero suits in Kick-Ass #1. This “real life” superhero even has a MySpace profile. Is this a attention-grabber or is it a book worth picking up? Find out in this review.

Is Thor #6 the Thor we’ve been waiting for? It’s subdue early on in this series, but we reckon this book has finally arrived with this come forth.

Then Captain America #35, continues the fantastic report arc with Bucky as the new Captain America. Justin calls it “an event comic written like a regular comic”.

In this Speed Round, we check out Excellent & Evil #1 which really had some unexpected Biblical overtones, Ex Machina #34, Courageous and The Bold #10 which is fun ancient school comic book action, Gulf #3, and Locke & Key #1 written by Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son.

In the mailbag: Metamorphic questions about our take on Mini-Series. Do more minis mean less attention to long-running series? Are more minis a excellent thing?

i went to your blog about the “real first” Gerard way comic and it was amusing because all is making such a huge deal of it saying “he lied to us, how dare he!”

same here, i personally felt it had a hell of a cliffhanger but the “others” statement made it sound more like more people would do this after his time.

Read only a few of my books today. Certainly more than enough to satisfy me for the day. Thor was fantastic like I knew it wold be. Thoroughly loved Marvel Zombies 2 despite the flaws pointed out on the show. The latest installment of the LSH report arc in Action Comics has been fantastic. Im on the fence about New Warriors. Surprised I really liked X-Men Legacy a lot. Gonna go and close the rest of my books.

I really picked up Kick-Ass #1 today and the report caught my attention from page one. While it is subdue a small early to tell, this series has tremendous amount of potential (21st century Watchmen, anyone?) The mention of other “super”heroes showing up later in the report also makes me excited for the upcoming issues. Bring it!!!

What does it mean to “Write for the trade”?

  21. Jobonds on October 24th, 2008 10:54 am

Not dredge up Steve Rogers? In favor of this Bucky/Cyborg/commie/Red Skull puppet? What are you smoking?
Cap was Marvel’s Batman, and killing him off was just another watershed event in the ruination of the total Marvel Universe.

  22. sewerkid on October 24th, 2008 10:54 am

    tsk tsk I meant Alex… it’s monday.

  23. sewerkid on October 24th, 2008 10:54 am

I choose with Pete. I like DC miniseries more than Marvel, but in both suitcases if the main report is excellent the miniseries are excellent too.
